About Webmonkey

The Monkey Bite Archive

Every Monday through Friday-ish, we post a new Monkey Bite on our frontdoor for your edification. This could be a little news item, a link to a useful site, a handy coding tip, or just some random piece of information we think might be of interest to Web developers. Expired Monkey Bites are stored right here, growing tastier and more sophisticated with each passing day.

This month's Monkey Bites:

08/29/02

Once you've got yourself all fonted up, go grab yourself some free fonts and get typing — like, stat!

The eye-blowing graphics that relational search engine KartOO (which also comes in regular HTML for you two Flash-phobes) serves up sure do remind us of interplanetary space travel. (But then really, what doesn't?)

08/22/02

Tonight Apple is finally "letting the cat out of the bag." Yes, it's Mac OS X v10.2 Jaguar (get it? cat? out of the bag?) and it hits the shelves this Friday at 10:20pm (get it? version 10.2? at 10:20?). Is the new release as good as its puns? We'll find out soon!

08/21/02

Don't forget: Tonight, in a benefit for the Electronic Frontier Foundation's campaign for audio-visual free expression, Wil Wheaton (of Ensign Wesley Crusher fame) goes toe-to-toe with Barney at the DNA Lounge, right here in San Francisco. Doors open at 9!

08/19/02

Leslie Harpold (who finally got Smug.com back from that bad, bad domain thief [smiley] but appears to have lost Hoopla.com [frownie]) and Michael Sippey are having themselves a PowerPoint duel!

08/18/02

Ask nicely enough, and keep a cute online diary, and you might just get people to pay off over US$20,000 of your credit card debt. Just one more example of a dream larva becoming a butterfly of reality, all thanks to the magic of the Internet!

08/15/02

Arty car alarms that blare bird songs? Rock pebbler parrots that mimic modems? Boy oh boy, this world sure is going to the dogs.

08/13/02

A recent Salon article dips into DeletedDomains.com's list of over fifteen million lapsed domains and finds a delightful array of the kind of "huh? what?" names — RentAChicken.com? CheesePile.com? — that tend to get registered in the wee, drunken hours of the night.

08/12/02

Two of the Web's progenitors are thinking big — Vinton Cerf (designer of TCP/IP) and Tim Berners-Lee want to take the Web interplanetary. Their plans, including new Internet protocols and a re-thinking of the way servers talk to each other, could soon be used to beam data from Saturn directly to your cell phone. Somebody call Buck Rogers!

08/08/02

Ready for a truly odd multimedia experience? Take a few deep, cleansing breaths and meet one Larry Carlson — he runs both Virtual OM and an eponymous site — as he tickles your third eye center. Loads of fun, whether you are a certified Flash master or not.

08/06/02

Blogtree is a blog genealogy tool that lets registrants declare which "parent blog" influenced the creation of their own blogs — could be kind of interesting and illuminating (a la the Van Gogh Museum, which puts paintings that inspired Vinny right next to his work), could be completely unnecessary. It all depends on who you are and what you're wearing.

08/05/02

Hey, ladies and Germans! We Webmonkeys (well OK, just Mike) have updated the browser charts! So now you know which features what browsers support on which operating system, Linux, Mac, Windows, or some other OS — each beautiful link a total "bookmark that for later"!
