The Monkey Bite Archive

Every Monday through Friday-ish, we post a new Monkey Bite on our frontdoor for your edification. This could be a little news item, a link to a useful site, a handy coding tip, or just some random piece of information we think might be of interest to Web developers. Expired Monkey Bites are stored right here, growing tastier and more sophisticated with each passing day.

This month's Monkey Bites:

Hey, Halloween is this Thursday ... do you have a costume yet? You could dress up as your favorite white-collar criminal, but if you really want to scare the kiddies, go as a Webmonkey.

Ever been forced to re-install a fave application only to discover the software maker has moved on to a yuckier, cruftier version? Or maybe version 5.1.3 of your chat client doesn't give you the warm fuzzies the way that 2.7 did. If so, OldVersion.com has your back.

Really want to leave your mark? Send her pee-mail! And if you make it super funny, you may just get her laughing hard and long enough to prompt an epistolary response of her very own. (Get it, e-PISStolary? Sigh. We need a nap before we try any more urine puns.)

This Saturday, 37 teams are flying their hand-built, human-powered planes off Pier 30 in San Francisco. Will "Butter Ducky" catch some air? Will "Mr. Beefy" take a dive? Find out at this year's Flugtag — free!

Wired Magazine (once a direct relative of Webmonkey, now a thirteenth step-uncle thrice removed or something) is auctioning off a bunch of the gee-whiz-bang booty they've reviewed over the years. (All proceeds go to charity, honest!)

10/15/02

It's official: The FOX Sports Fan Site Builder has taken the field! So sign up and build one for the home team today. (And we're not just saying that because the tool was created by Webmonkey's kissing cousin, Tripod.) (Go Giants.)

10/14/02

If you're going to fight the good Googlefight, you need to get yourself a fine pair of guns. Pow, pow.

10/07/02

This November is National Novel Writing Month. Think you can write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30? Sign up today! What to set your sights slightly lower? (Yeah, us too.) Sic those formidable creative powers on Josh's sexiest sentence alive contest.

Further proof that smaller is better: A group of nanotech scientists have laid down plans to build a nano-memory device that uses atoms of silicon to record binary data. If it works, the device will have one million times the storage density of a CD-R. That's 650 million megabytes per CD. Think of all the MP3s!

"Meet the Makers Goes West" hits San Francisco this October 21, giving you "behind-the-screens" insight into how some of the Web's most popular and successful sites are built. So if your employer is willing to foot the bill (do companies still do stuff like that?), or you've got US$695 to spare, it sounds like a worthy event.
