The Monkey Bite Archive

Every Monday through Friday-ish, we post a new Monkey Bite on our frontdoor for your edification. This could be a little news item, a link to a useful site, a handy coding tip, or just some random piece of information we think might be of interest to Web developers. Expired Monkey Bites are stored right here, growing tastier and more sophisticated with each passing day.

This month's Monkey Bites:

The annual geek-fest known as CodeCon 2003 has been scheduled for February 22-24 in San Francisco. Rub elbows with fellow hackers, get your PGP key signed, and witness demos of such community-minded projects as Advogato, Khashmir, and YouServ. And have a cocktail while you're at it!

Have you ever dreamed of carving up some freshie poached powder or busting a sick air off the lip while blasting Slayer on the cans? Yeah, us too.

With RE-INVIGORATE, you can track your site traffic and get hot, steamy data about your hits, uniques, browser versions, operating systems, and screen resolutions, all served up in nice, tidy pie charts. Mmm, pie. (Registration required.)

For those times in your life when real human interaction is just too much, try the virtual sort. There.com and The Game Neverending — both accepting new members for public beta tests — are setting the trend for virtual communities that let you play, shop, and kibbitz with e-folk from anywhere in the world.

Don't risk mistakenly regifting that holiday clunker book, CD, or movie to the very person who gave it to you, use it to earn points on Swappingtons instead! (And tell them TREMBLE sent you, because that's where we heard it first!)

Is your Web server running? Better go catch it! Find out what wacky hijinks your server gets up to while you sleep with The Netcraft Web Server Query Form, which lets you keep tabs on any server's uptime — and also find out what OS it's running.

We're not entirely sure what the deal is with the GameBoy Computerized Sewing Machine from Singer (maybe it lets you make an awesome Tetris stitch?), but we want one. Stat.

Does the music industry (i.e., The Man) owe you money? If you bought yourself a "prerecorded music product" between January 1, 1995 and December 22, 2000, it/He just might. To find out if you're a potential member of the settlement group, check out CD MAP Settlement.

Holy cow, it's Macworld time! And Apple is debuting all kinds of fresh loot. For instance the newest G4 Powerbook, with a DVD-riffic 17-inch screen, or Safari, an Apple-branded browser made especially for OS X (which Webmonkey Mike is furiously downloading so he can write up a full review later in the week).
